E.J. Strelitz President and CEO | The Dump

THE DUMP IS AN OUTLET FOR BRAND-NAME FURNITURE, mattresses, Oriental rugs and carpet at 40 to 70 percent off the regular price. It has grown from a single-location to one of the largest furniture outlet chains with 10 stories in six states.

E. J. Strelitz conceived and launched the chain. While a division of Virginia Beach-based Haynes Furniture, The Dump was a separate concept with no guarantee for success. Strelitz risked at least $12 million to open each Dump store. And despite a recession, he has decided to open a location in Chicago later this year, requiring an investment of about $18 million. It will be 25 percent larger than any existing Dump store and among the largest in the Chicago market.

In addition, he follows his family's tradition of philanthropy. He has been president of the Strelitz Diabetes Center, a board member of the Children's Hospital of The King's Daughters, the United Jewish Federation and a founding donor of the Strelitz Early Childhood Center.

Here he talks about the journey and who has helped along the way.

The Dump Opens Chicago Market Store

Furniture retailer The Dump opened its 11th store over the weekend in the Chicago area.

The 134,000-square-foot store in Lombard, Ill., is the latest in the furniture retailer's nationwide expansion plan.

"Today marks the beginning of an entirely new furniture shopping experience for the Chicago marketplace," said E.J. Strelitz, president and CEO of The Dump. "At The Dump, we are able to consistently deliver massive savings on the best furniture, mattresses and rugs as a result of our unique retail business model. Unlike traditional retail, The Dump is open Friday, Saturday and Sunday each week, which allows us to replenish our stock with completely new inventory during the rest of the week. We are also able to keep our overhead lower by closing the store during the traditionally slower period of the week and pass those savings onto the consumer."

The Dump lands in Lombard

What? A Dump?

Yea that's right. Lucky Lombard is where The Dump, a high-end furniture outlet, is slated to open its doors late next month. And lucky too are the 250 workers that will get jobs now that The Dump is opening in a western suburb of the city.

The Dump has tried to make a big deal out of its job fair that was held July 12 and the rather unique working arrangement the furniture outlet is offering employees. Because Dump management has apparently recognized people do most of their shopping for furniture on weekends, The Dump is open only three days a week — Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

The Dump to open first Chicago store Aug. 30

CHICAGO — Top100 company Haynes Furniture will open its first Chicagoland furniture outlet in the suburb of Lombard, Ill., and its 11th overall Dump later this summer.

The 134,000-square-foot store - the largest high-end furniture outlet in the market, according the company - is slated to open Aug. 30 in the former Great Indoors space at South Highland Avenue and Butterfield Road. The retailer, which follows Warren, Mich.-based Art Van into the market, expects to hire 250 people, including more than 100 people in sales, operations, management and stock positions.

The Virginia Beach, Va.-based retailer did not immediately disclose its investment or projected sales for the market.

"The August 30th sneak preview of our Lombard location marks a major milestone for The Dump and demonstrates our long-term commitment to expanding The Dump brand nationally," said E.J. Strelitz, President and CEO of Haynes and its The Dump division.

Looking for a $250 mattress or a $20,000 Oriental rug?

A T.J.MAXX FOR FURNITURE

"Right now, we have a sofa that is identical to one that retails for $3,900 at Restoration Hardware in our stores for $2,295," he said, adding that the Dump is essentially a T.J.Maxx for furniture. The Dump also carries $5,000 Oriental rugs that retail for as much as $20,000 in places like New York's ABC Carpet & Home, as well as rugs for as little as $100.

Like the Sleepy's expansion, the Dump's entrance into the Chicago market marks the chain's first foray into the Midwest. The company has 10 locations in Pennsylvania, Texas, Virginia, Georgia, Arizona and New Jersey.

"We've been wanting to come into Chicago for five years, and we think we can do it with one store, whereas New York or L.A. would require three or four," Mr. Strelitz said.

The store operates only Friday through Sunday and brings in a constant array of new inventory. Only one or two of each style is generally available.

"By the time Sunday night comes around, the store is a mess and 40 percent of our inventory is gone, so we need most of the subsequent week to recover, bring in new merchandise, tag it and get it on the floor," Mr. Strelitz explained. "And we don't want our salespeople to be hanging around, bored, not doing anything on Tuesday mornings." He said salespeople, who earn $10 an hour plus commission, can "realistically" expect to earn $75,000 annually working three days a week.

The company, which began in 1986 as "a real dump" in an old grocery store warehouse in Virginia, began growing in earnest over the past decade, Mr. Strelitz said.

"The furniture business is a pretty crazy, very fragmented business," he said. "There are very few barriers to entry, so there's tremendous competition and there's always suppliers coming to market to try their hand." That means plenty of leftover inventory.

The discount-designer furniture store that's killing it

Twice a year E.J. Strelitz's company buys up designer showrooms from High Point Market in North Carolina, the furniture industry's monster trade show, and brings them -- along with other furnishings from across the country -- to a place called The Dump.

It's a curious name for a national chain that trades in major life purchases -- that Italian leather sectional, that hand-knotted rug by Calvin Klein. But in a furniture industry clobbered in recent years both by the rise of imports and the Great Recession, The Dump's done well by its strategy: selling discounted-designer furniture in sprawling stores that are open just three days a week.

"Ironically, we really shine in higher-end goods," says CEO Strelitz, who regularly touts half-off prices big-ticket items.

Looking for Furniture? The Dump opens in Lombard on October 11

The Dump, a new discount furniture store in Lombard, is holding its official grand opening this weekend. It is the 11th store in a chain that started out as a clearance outlet for Haynes Furniture stores in Norfolk, VA. The people at Haynes saw the potential to buy different closeouts, so they expanded the outlet into its own chain.

"We buy deals from all the brand-name manufacturers,” says E.J. Strelitz, president of Haynes Furniture. One of the best sources of furniture is for The Dump is the High Point Market, where furniture companies show their latest designs and prototypes. These floor models are cleared out in time for the manufacturers to stock for new shows, and The Dump is a major buyer.

The opening sale is expected to have sample sale items from Calvin Klein, Natuzzi Italia, Sherrill Furniture, and Old Hickory Furniture, among others. And, The Dump is giving out free t-shirts with any purchase during the opening.

Everything for sale is either brand new or a floor model; the inventory includes furniture, accessories, rugs, and mattresses. "It's all first quality, all under manufacturer's warranty,” Strelitz says. Strelitz says that running The Dump is a lot of fun. "We're merchants, and we love finding great deals,” he says.

There are two unusual features of The Dump to know. The first is that new merchandise comes in all the time, so you never know what you will find. The second is that the store is open only on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. If Monday is a holiday, the store may be open then, too.

I overheard a young man talking on his smart phone after he was just offered a sales position at our store, and the excitement in his voice was palpable. "Yeah," he continued to say. "I work only three days a week, and I can make $75,000 a year. Can you believe that? It sounds almost too good to be true." But it is true. On August 30th, The Dump, America's number-one outlet chain, will be opening a new store in Lombard, Illinois, and as CEO and President of The Dump, I can tell you that everything that young man just exclaimed is absolutely true.

Get Your Furniture At The Dump!

The Dump - not a very sophisticated name for a furniture store. But if you are looking for furniture, it is the best place in the Dallas metroplex. When I visited this place back in February, I was drooling over their pretty furniture. Their prices are to-die-for.

Where would you be able to find a great quality sectional suede couch that seats at least 6 and an ottoman for $700? The Dump has it!!!

A client mentioned that her dining table that she had purchased from The Dump for $1,500 sold for over $3,000 at another furniture store. The exact same make and model. That's a 50% savings....

The Dump is conveniently located in Las Colinas/ Irving Texas area. To get there, get on I-635 (towards the airport). Exit Olympus (after the MacArthur exit). The Dump will be on your right (pass Fry's Electronics and Home Depot).

The Dump is open only on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. That is how they keep their overhead low. They are open from 10am - 9pm on Fridays and Saturdays and 12pm - 8pm on Sundays.

If you are looking for quality furniture at prices that will surprise you, think The Dump!!!!
