The Start

Making a piece of furniture at age 12 in a school woodwork class provided the spark of inspiration and passion that has driven Jonathan Sowter for almost 30 years. Soon after school, Jon began training as a cabinet maker at a furniture company in Yorkshire, eventually earning a BA (Hons) in Furniture Design and Craft. His journey took an exciting turn when he was recruited to help set up a furniture factory in Rajasthan. Two years later, he launched his own furniture business in 2004. What started with just 10 employees in a small workshop has now grown into a company with over 1,000 staff.

Craftmanship
the quality of design and work shown in something made by hand; artistry

Jonathan Charles are artists in a studio, not machines on an assembly line. Founded by English furniture designer Jonathan Sowter, the company has gained global acclaim for its mastery in fine antique reproductions. The skilled craftsmen and craftswomen at Jonathan Charles are true artisans, employing traditional techniques like lost-wax casting, hand-cut marquetry, and intricate hand carvings to create furniture of unmatched quality. Each piece reflects centuries of craftsmanship, embodying a rich legacy of artistry.

What sets Jonathan Charles apart from most furniture makers is its dedication to custom-casting all hardware in its own foundry. This unique process ensures that every piece of furniture is one-of-a-kind. The bespoke pulls, locks, hinges, and keys offer unmatched customization, providing limitless design possibilities and an extraordinary level of attention to detail.

VISION
the ability to think about the future with imagination and wisdom

The world doesn’t need more mass-produced goods. Like the artisans in their studio, the Jonathan Charles design team is driven by a passion for creating pieces that are truly collectible. Their furniture commands attention in any space, offering a carefully crafted aesthetic that resembles a work of art. Each piece is designed to make a bold statement and provoke a response.

The team draws inspiration from the world around them – whether it’s the texture of fossilized coral, the feel of Scottish fog, or the elegance of an antique French radiator cover – seeking to create unique pieces and thoughtfully curated collections that evoke a similar sense of wonder. Jonathan Charles furniture isn’t just functional; it’s a tactile, visual, and emotional experience.
